Meet Hirwa, Age Nine!

Our school ends at 5:00p.m., and that's when I go home.

How do you get to school? Are you allowed to go to school by yourself?:

I walk to school. Some days I go by myself, and some days my friends meet me at my door and we go together. It takes me five minutes to walk to school.

Where do you eat lunch? What is your favorite food?:

I eat lunch at home because my house is so close by. My auntie cooks for me and my uncle. My favorite food is meat from a cow.

What language do you speak at school? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

I speak English and Kinyarwanda at school. I study French, too, but we don't speak it that much.

"Hello" is Muraho (Moo-rah-hoe).

What are some common kids' names at your school?:

Some common names are Emmanuel, Jean Pierre, Amahoro, Denyse and Solange.

What subjects do you study in school, and which one is your favorite?:

I study math, Kinyarwanda, English, geography, science and physical education. Math and English are my favorites.

What is your homework like?:

I have math problems sometimes and science questions, too. I write them in my notebook before I leave school.

What do you like to do after school? Do you have a favorite sport or game?:

I like to watch T.V., listen to music, play ball with my neighbors and play with our dog, Vandi. When Bekah comes over, I get to play UNO, spoons or which one is bigger (that's what we call the card game War).
