Tangihanga is complex and still evolving today partly due to changes in social structures and the influence of pākehā culture on Maāori traditions. However, from what I observed, New Zealand recognizes the importance of tangihanga to Māori culture, permitting absences from the workplace so that relatives can attend the ceremony and respecting the mourning period.
Overall, New Zealand culture and Māori culture are inseparable. This is why recognizing the unique perspectives of Māori people is important in creating a country that is respectful and diverse. New Zealand continues to struggle with racial injustice towards the Maori and other minority groups, but recognizing that these issues are present is an important first step towards resolving conflict.
