This is why archeologists find ancient tools buried in Trier that are made out of materials from thousands of miles away. Because of the environment, Trier was a perfect place for the Treveri, then the Romans, then medieval villagers and now modern-day Germans to call home.
Trier has a couple of environmental issues facing it today. One of these is high wind speeds. I often will check the weather in the morning and see that there are warnings about fast winds. Another problem is that when there is a high amount of rain, there is a danger of mudslides because of the loose soil on steep hills. Sometimes farmers who grow their crops on very steep hillsides will lose some of their goods on days with massive amounts of rain. Finally, because the overall temperature of the earth is rising, Europe has had extremely hot summers. It’s become more and more dangerous for people to go outside for too long in the summer, and there have been many more cases of heat exhaustion.
The town was built because of the environment, so everything interconnected. One of the best ways people are using the environment today is by harnessing wind power for electricity! When you look out over the hills surrounding Trier, many of them have giant wind turbines. These produce power for the city, so windy days are actually pretty useful! Even though the windiness of the area can be difficult, people are using it to their advantage. In this regard, at least, not much has changed in Trier since the Treveri were making the most of their location.
