When you spend some time in Taiwan, you quickly notice that the people here care about the environment. It is something that they bring up in conversation. It is something that they put into practice with their recycling program. Therefore, it is surprising that people here can still negatively impact their environment.
During my time in Taiwan, I have notice two big ways that people in Taiwan negatively impact their environment: littering and air pollution. Littering is when people take trash, such as an empty coffee cup, and throw it on the ground wherever they are. This is not good for the environment because it can hurt animals and leak dangerous chemicals into the ground and water. It also just looks bad. What is interesting about littering in Taiwan is that it seems to mostly be a problem in the rural areas, outside of the cities. In the U.S., most littering seems to take place in urban, or city, settings. In Taiwan, it is the opposite. On my way to school, I walk past many rice paddies. A lot of them have trash strewn about the borders of the paddy, or even inside the paddy. How might you fix this problem?
Taiwan also has a major problem with air pollution, but some of it is not directly Taiwan's fault. Taiwan is near China, which has a lot of factories.
