Traveler Bio

My name is Sandra Mulsow. I am a volunteer with the U.S. Peace Corps. I am in South America, in the country of Ecuador. I am lucky to live in the capital city of Quito. I will live here by myself for one year. All my family is back home in Texas: my husband, my grown-up children, my grandchildren, and my little dog, Ladybird. I miss them all very much, but it is also exciting to live in a different country and see new things.

Before I joined the Peace Corps, I was a history teacher in a little Texas town called Wilson. I love history, learning about different cultures, and looking at maps. I loved teaching and being around kids all day. I also wanted to have my own adventure, so I retired from teaching and joined the Peace Corps. Peace Corps is my chance to help people, learn about Ecuador, and practice speaking Spanish. All of it keeps me busy!

I love to read!  Books are a wonderful way to learn. When I was little, I would read picture books and imagine what it would be like to be in the story. Another way to learn is to go out and experience things on your own. I get to do that every day here in Quito. I go to museums, markets, and parks. Sometimes, I just walk around and look at all the different shops and people on the street. It is fun to see the ways we are all different, but also how much we have in common. That is what makes travel and volunteering fun for me.

Peace Corps Volunteers like me live and work side by side with community members around the world, collaborating on locally prioritized projects, building relationships, exchanging cultures and knowledge, and helping transform lives for generations. Learn more by clicking here.
