In a typical week, I may only travel about five to ten miles to go to the market or the bank. However, since I am visiting Portugal, I traveled 1,826 miles!
I’m not sure how many miles I have traveled in total, but from my home in Wisconsin, I am about 4,750 miles away! If I were to add up all the miles I have traveled in a plane, a car and by foot, I bet I would be over 20,000 miles. I have had the opportunity to travel all over The Gambia, as well as visit other countries including Ireland, Spain, Italy and Portugal.
This week, I had a long trek to the airport from my village. I started by walking to the main road from my house. Then, I took the local transportation called a gele-gele. These are passenger vans or minibuses that follow a specific route. It took about 30 minutes to arrive at the ferry terminal. I then needed to cross the Gambia River, so I took the ferry for 40 minutes to arrive in the capital, Banjul. From the capital, I needed to take two more cars to finally arrive at the airport! From The Gambia, it took about six hours of flying time to finally arrive in Lisbon, Portugal.
