Teaching English at the Youth Center

The students' ages vary between the three classes that we teach, but mostly I teach either six-year-olds or teenagers! They both are really fun to teach because of different reasons; the young kids are fun because they are so excited to learn a new language, while the older kids are fun because they can carry on small conversations in English.

The typical curriculum consists of going over the basics of the English language. For example, today I went over conjugating verbs in the present tense. My experience teaching English not only helps my teaching skills but improves my capacity to learn languages too. It forces me to think about the structure of the language that I speak and in doing so, it helps me understand how the Arabic language is structured as well.

I am so happy that I decided to volunteer at the Youth Center. The children are so excited to learn, and that excitement helps to sustain my language learning. When people are passionate about learning, it helps to motivate others. I am really glad that I decided to do something that I was afraid to do because it has taught me a lot about who I am and what I want to accomplish in life!
