The Heidelberg Christmas Market

Introduction:

During the month of December, I would walk out of my home and find myself in a loud and colorful world. The streets were lined with stands and were busy with people eating, drinking, and admiring the local art. The buildings were decorated with twinkling lights and music played. An ice-rink was even built in one of the town squares, with a view of the Heidelberg Castle above. I am not that great at ice-skating, but I went anyway and it was a lot of fun!

What tradition did I learn about?:

A Christmas market is a street market that happens during the four weeks of Advent, leading up to Christmas. The stands sell wooden crafts, candles, and paintings. There is a special drink for this time of the year called Glühwein which is warm and has spices.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

The winter months can get very dark, cold, and gloomy in Germany. Christmas markets are not only a way to celebrate the holidays, but also light up the town and bring families and friends together.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

The tradition of Christmas markets actually started in Germany!
