While many homes today are made with cinderblocks and tin roofs, there are also opportunities to explore more sustainable building materials. Bamboo is one material that grows quickly and can be very strong. The Bamboo Institute Timor-Leste already works with community bamboo groups across the country to plant and harvest bamboo, but currently the institute does not do much bamboo construction.
In the future, the Bamboo Institute could learn from organizations in Bali, Indonesia, where builders create beautiful homes, schools and villas using bamboo and other natural materials. These buildings show that bamboo can be both strong and beautiful, while also being better for the environment.
Learning from these examples could help inspire new ways of building homes in Timor-Leste that use local materials and protect the environment. I also have a personal dream connected to this idea. One day, I would like to return to Timor-Leste and work together with my counterpart, Maun Mario, to build a bamboo house that I could live in. Right now it is just a dream, but sometimes dreams are the first step toward creating something real.
