Many homes in Timor-Leste are built in a simple and practical way. Most houses are made from cinderblocks with metal or tin roofs. These materials are common because they are affordable and relatively easy to build with. While the houses may look simple, they are important places where families live, cook and spend time together.
One special feature of many homes in Timor-Leste is the veranda. The veranda is a covered outdoor space in front of the house where people can sit and relax. In the mornings or afternoons, it is common to see people sitting on the veranda drinking coffee, talking with family members or greeting neighbors who pass by. Coffee is an important part of life in Timor-Leste, and the veranda is often where these conversations happen.
In the house where I live, the veranda is also an important part of daily life. My bedroom is right next to the veranda, so when I open my bedroom door and step outside, I walk directly into this shared space. It is a place where people gather, talk, and enjoy the fresh air. Sometimes we sit together and drink coffee while watching the day begin or the sun go down.
