The Day the Ocean Went Quiet

Introduction:

On my boat trip from Dili to Atauro Island, I experienced the ocean environment in a way I will never forget. More than 50 dolphins swam and jumped around our boat, and we later saw humpback whales rising to the surface to breathe. When the captain turned off the engine, the ocean became completely quiet, and we could hear the whales breathing. That moment helped me understand how special—and powerful—this environment really is.

What makes this environment special or different?:

The ocean near Atauro Island is very deep, even close to shore. This allows large animals like whales to travel through the area. The warm, clear water supports colorful coral reefs and many types of fish. The area is also part of a whale migration route, meaning humpback whales pass through these waters each year during their long journey across the ocean. Seeing so many dolphins swimming together showed me how healthy and alive this environment is.

What parts of this environment help people to live here?:

The ocean provides food and jobs for people on Atauro Island. Many families fish for their meals or income. The beautiful reefs, dolphins and whales also attract visitors. Boat captains, snorkeling guides and small guesthouses depend on the ocean for tourism. The same environment that supports whales and dolphins also supports the people who live there.
