Shopping Locally

Introduction:

Countries around the world rely on trade to grow their economies. New Zealand is no different and needs to import many different items from around the globe such as computers, telecommunication equipment, automobiles, minerals, plastics and furniture. However, you may ask yourself, what do the people eat? I learned that a lot of their food comes from local sources, which keeps the price low and the quality high.

What makes this environment special or different?:

New Zealand is an island nation that is located far away from other countries that are its trading partners. This makes trading or importing goods difficult and often expensive. However, although New Zealand's land area is relatively small, the ocean's resources are vast.

What parts of this environment help people to live here?:

The ocean provides a rich food source for New Zealanders. While being surrounded by a vast ocean makes importing goods difficult, it makes collecting local food sources easy. Seafood is plentiful throughout New Zealand because you are never far from the ocean! Plus, the relative closeness of the cities, compared to those in a country like the U.S., makes it quick and easy to transport food across the islands.
