2. How do you feel about the place and people where you will live and study? Why?

I was excited about experiencing Germany firsthand since I had family (great great great grandparents) who immigrated from Germany to Wisconsin. Being in Germany gives me the fascinating opportunity to trace back my ancestry. In addition, the U.S. and Germany have an extensive history which sadly has generated stereotypes that we see in entertainment as Germans being the “traditional enemy”. Coming to Germany would give me the opportunity to confront those stereotypes in my mind!

3. How would you characterize a successful study abroad experience? How do you envision yourself having a successful study abroad experience?

The Fulbright has the motto that we are “ambassadors”, and this word, for me, characterizes a successful study abroad. The reason is because as an ambassador you come not just to gain from your time but also to learn. As a part of my responsibilities as a Fulbrighter, I wanted to be intentional with learning the language but also to develop strong relationships with my coworkers and fellow peers in my language class. I also knew exercise was a key part of maintaining a healthy routine since this helps reduce my stress levels. This was also my first year of marriage, so learning to be kind on myself and express when I began to feel homesick was important to me.

4. What challenges do you expect to encounter when you are studying abroad and how are you preparing yourself to handle them?
