However, I think I like normal rice better as the buckwheat's texture was crunchier than most rice and did not taste as good on its own without the potato cakes. I'm normally not a huge fan of sausage, but the one we ordered was grilled and came with a sauce on the side, which made it taste amazing. While I have had gnocchi many times before, it has usually been made with potatoes. My friend's pumpkin gnocchi had a very different taste, but it was sweet and savory at the same time and is something I'll definitely be ordering again in the future. I love all kinds of food and experiencing a place's food is one of my favorite parts of exploring a new culture. I left the restaurant feeling happy, satisfied and very full!
My potato cakes were prepared two different ways. Some were pan-fried, and some were boiled with an onion cream sauce on top. The buckwheat was steamed similarly to how rice is made. The sausage we got was grilled and served with lettuce and a white sauce on the side, although I'm not really sure what kind of sauce it was. My friend's pumpkin gnocchi was first boiled like most pasta and then added to the sauce made from cream and pumpkin seed oil and cooked in a pan.
Traditional food is often connected in many ways to the environment and history of its country. Slovenia is no exception. Meat was once very expensive, so many traditional dishes are made primarily from vegetables or in ways that utilize the most out of the meat that they have, such as in sausages. Therefore, dishes containing vegetables and potatoes are very common. Further, Slovenia uses its own resources for many of its dishes.
