Hello! My name is Sophia Young, and I am so excited to be your traveler in Brazil this year. I am originally from Virginia, but I was actually born in Switzerland, so being connected to different places around the world has always been a part of my life. I came to New Orleans for college and graduated from Tulane University in 2025. While I was there, I studied languages and cultures and worked hard to learn Portuguese so I could connect with people in Brazil.
Now I am living in Amargosa, a small city in the state of Bahia in Brazil. I am teaching English at a university called Universidade Federal do Recôncavo da Bahia (UFRB), where I get to work with Brazilian students every day. I love learning how people from different countries live, celebrate, create art, and care for nature. I also enjoy spending time outside, listening to music, reading books, and learning new languages.
Even though I’ll be living in Brazil this year, New Orleans is a very special place to me. In fact, the two places actually have some cool things in common. They both love music, big celebrations, and bringing people together! I can’t wait to share what life is like here and learn about what’s happening in your classroom, too. Get ready for adventures!
