Hallo! My name is Sophie Rouse, and I am 23 years old. I am originally from Memphis, Tennessee, but I have lived in Texas for the past two years.
I started learning German at age 15 when I was fortunate to receive a Congress-Bunestag Youth Exchange scholarship. This grant allowed me to spend my 10th-grade year of high school living in Ubstat-Weiher Germany with an amazing host family and attend a German-language Gymnasium. I studied German and History as an undergraduate at the University of Memphis. Then I earned my master's degree in History at Texas A&M University where I began to develop a love for teaching while also researching German immigration to the United States. While at Texas A&M University, I applied for and was fortunate to receive the U.S. Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Grant. I currently live in Göttingen, Germany and teach at Theodor-Heuss Gymnasium (THG).
At THG, I have the opportunity to work with students from the 6th, 7th, 10th, and 11th grades. I deliver presentations on the United States while also helping the students develop their English-language written, conversational, and listening skills. THG is a bit different from other Gymnasiums in Germany as they have bilingual English language and German language classes. I cannot wait to share my time in Germany with you and am looking forward to hearing about your experiences this year, too!
