This week I took to the water, swimming my little heart out against the current of the waterfalls, racing with my friends up and down the rivers and splashing with my bare-feet as I climbed up small cascades in the jungle to get a better view.
Taking a break from the jungles and monkeys, let’s have a quick lesson in Mayan! This week I got to learn how to say my name, and I think the process is really cool. First, every name starts with a letter that signifies the gender. For girls it is X (sounds like "shh") and for boys it is J (sounds like "heh"). After the first letter, your name would follow, for example, X Claire or J Dante. Sometimes in Mayan, the names can be shortened. For my name, X Sophie can also be X Soop ("Shh s(oh)p"). Some other examples might be X Vaal (Valerie), X Saam (Samantha), and J Caar (Carlos).
