Living within the city allows them to bike to school, especially since a lot of the schools are smaller and set for a specific region of the city. Those without a bike often walk in packs or take the local public transport, which could be a bus or even Transport for Wales, the train that works within the local area. Schools don't provide buses or transportation the way they do in the US and so my students were fascinated about the legend of the yellow schoolbus!
Depending on your age group, you may be allowed to leave school for lunch. I see many secondary school students (what we call high schoolers in the US) walk around the city to grab lunch.
While English is widely spoken, children in Wales are now required to learn Welsh throughout their schooling.
