After decades of abusing resources along the Danube, researchers are looking for ways to overcome the environmental issues of urban societies and climate change. Over the last 25 years, people have been doing their best to protect the Danube River. On the section near Budapest, it is the first river to be named a UNESCO Site. Hungary has recognized it as with international importance.
On a social note, locals in Budapest first adapted to the river by beginning to build bridges. This allowed for the economy to improve and combine the two cities into one. In modern-day Budapest, the city has used the river for tourism, with hundreds of large river cruises pulling up to the riverbanks with tourists every day.
