Travel News

How far did I travel this week?:

I didn't travel much outside of the city this week, although I do have to ride the bus for about an hour to and from school every day. Next week, however, I'll be traveling to Easter Island, which is 3,768 km (2341 miles) from my home here in Chile!

How far have I traveled on this journey so far?:

Since I visited Puerto Varas, I have traveled over 12,078 km or 7,505 miles (11,064 km in Puerto Varas + 1,014 km returning to Santiago), and that doesn't even include my daily bus rides.

How did I get around this week?:

I rode the bus and sometimes the metro to and from the university, but I also walked around the city a lot because the weather was nice. Some streets around Plaza de Armas in the old city center of Santiago are pedestrian-only, so no cars or buses are allowed.

What was the most interesting place I visited this week?:

Our linguistics class took a trip to the National History Museum at the Plaza de Armas, which is in an old colonial Spanish-style building. The museum was interesting, but so was the area of the city around it. Plaza de Armas used to be the center of Santiago, and now it is a mixture of new businesses, a metro station, and busy city streets combined with the old architecture, cathedral, and public square, with many street vendors, artisans, and pedestrians.
