A few months ago, I visited a tiny country in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea called Malta! While I was there, I visited the National Aquarium of Malta, where I got to see all different kinds of sea creatures. The animal I found the most fascinating to observe was the jellyfish-- more specifically the moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita). Read on to find out why I found these sea creatures so compelling!
Moon jellyfish look like small umbrellas without the handle. Their size ranges from 10 to 16 inches in diameter. They have very short tentacles and have a translucent color. They also have a four-leaf clover shape on their belly, which are gonads (their reproductive organs).
Even though moon jellyfish are translucent in color, they can take on different colors, depending on their surroundings. For example, the jellyfish changed color when a different color light was switched on next to their tank. I felt mesmerized, watching the moon jellyfish gracefully float across the tank as they took on different colors such as red, fuschia and aquamarine.
