Nature in Taiwan

Introduction:

Have you ever spotted a fluffy little squirrel running up a tree while walking to class? During my time at National Taiwan University (NTU), I noticed some squirrels with darker fur than the ones I am used to seeing back home in California. These little creatures caught my attention so I learned a little more about what makes them unique.

What does this creature or plant look like?:

The Pallas's squirrel has a dark brown or grayish fur, a reddish-brown belly and a big fluffy tail. It also has little ears and shiny round eyes that make it look really cute!

How did I feel when I saw it?:

When I first saw it, I thought the squirrel was very cute and fluffy. I quickly became interested in how its darker brown fur looked different from the lighter-colored squirrels I usually see back home in California.

Where does it live?:

Pallas's squirrels live in forests, parks and green spaces. Around NTU campus, they can often be spotted climbing trees and running through the campus greenery. They especially like to skitter around the trees in the front gates of school.

How does it use its environment to survive?:

These squirrels will often use their sharp claws to climb trees and escape from any predators.
