Sun, Heat, Desert - Be Careful

The drier parts of the country have lots of birdlife, reptiles, insects and smaller mammals that call them their home.  This area is also an area that local people allow their domestic animals to graze.  These animals include:  cows, goats and donkeys.

What makes this environment special or different?:

The grasses that are native to Botswana make for a high quality beef product from its cows.  This meat is shipped around the world.

The grasslands that are created in the rainy season are plentiful enough to sustain the migration of enormous herds of wildebeests and water buffalo.  As I said before, the Okavango delta provides the ideal habitat for many species to live and thrive, although many are meat eaters.

What parts of this environment help people to live here?:

The yearlong and plentiful sunlight allow for production of a variety of crops and fruits.  The growing season for many crops is 9+ months, while the winter season is still warm enough for cool growing vegetables like onions, carrots and leafy greens.

The cows, goats and donkey species that live here provide a source of protein for the people of Botswana.  These specific breeds of animals are adapted to the heat and dryness.

What challenges do people face living in this environment?:

Being outside in the heat of the day can be quite dangerous. Many of the trees are low and provide very little shade to help you stay cool. Poisonous snakes are present and a bite could be dangerous if away from medical care.
