August was watermelon season, so the fresh-squeezed watermelon juices were to die for. Sometimes I treated myself to two in one night! Other than juice stands, night markets have food stands that are lined up for hundreds of meters on end. Shilin Night Market is not even the biggest market, but if you walk to find all of the nooks and crannies for the food, drinks, and sometimes even activities, you will have walked an entire track field at least! One pretty awesome food I have tried at the Shilin Night Market is the fried chicken from a stand called Hot-Star. It is famous for being XXL size, which was about the size of my face! Another thing I tried that I think is going to surprise you even more is a Taiwanese local food called stinky tofu. It definitely lives up to its name, but it's quite delicious!
Trying new foods always makes me feel so excited. Who knew there were so many flavors we have yet to experience, when food is something we eat every day? The fried chicken specifically was the best fried chicken I have ever had. The outside was so crispy, but once you bite in, the juicy tender chicken flavor hits you alongside the amazing chewy texture of the batter between the crisp and chicken. To be completely honest, the stinky tofu was making me a little nervous before I tried it. The smell is pretty prominent, and I was too scared to try it the first two months here. Being adventurous always pays off though, because once I bit into it, it was so yummy I wish I had tried it sooner!
