Pop Culture in Japan: Fashion

Many people wear different styles here. Some people wear streetwear and some wear proper clothing; it's a wide range. For example, there are some people who dress in goth clothing. It's more popular here in Japan than it is in America. There are many differnet styles of goth clothing, including Gothic Lolita. Because of Japan's pressure for people to look proper, some people who dress in goth style do it to go against these expectations. Expressing themselves is more important: "If I like dark clothing, I should wear it!" On the opposite side, some people prefer to look presentable, meaning a nice jacket with slacks (business pants) with a plain shirt. For them, beauty is simple. There are many more styles in Japan, but it would take days for me to type it all out. If you are still interested, I encourage you to just search up some Japanese fashion styles in your spare time; you might like them!

All in all, Japan is a place where fashion thrives. Part of the reason for that is because people are expected to dress up more in public. In response to that, some people dress up but choose to express themselves through more styles while still looking presentable. Other people do not want to listen and choose to dress how they want. From these responses, we can find styles like the proper 'business attire', Gothic Lolita style and many more. Others follow what their J-POP (Japanese) or K-POP (Korean) idols do. Some of these idols may even wear a more gothic style too! For better or for worse, Japan's fashion expectations has created many ways people can express themselves in fashion.
