One of the first things I learned in Italy is that food here isn’t just something you eat; each meal is an event. Every meal feels like it has a story behind it. Since I’ve been in Rome, I have tried a few dishes that completely changed how I look at food: Cacio e Pepe, Supplì, Caprese Salad, Roman Pizza, and Gelato (which I could honestly eat every day).
The first time I tried Cacio e Pepe, I didn’t expect much; it is literally just pasta, cheese and black pepper. But somehow, it tasted like the Italian version of macaroni and cheese if Gordon Ramsay (a famous British chef) made it himself. The dish is creamy, salty and kind of addictive. You take one bite and just think: Yeah, I get why people love this place.
Then there’s Supplì, which might be one of my favorite snacks on Earth. It’s a fried rice ball with tomato sauce and melted mozzarella in the middle. When you bite into it, the cheese stretches like a grilled cheese pull. It tastes like a Hot Pocket, a mozzarella stick and a pizza were combined all into one delicious food.
