Growing with the City

I studied Theatre, Spanish and Portuguese in college, so when I learned that you can create an independent research project with Fulbright, I knew I wanted to research Brazilian theatre.

São Paulo is not only the biggest city in Brazil, but it also is one of the most culturally diverse places. The constant movement and different ways of life in the city produce a lot of exciting art, including theatre! I am researching a city law that funds theatre that otherwise would not be funded by banks and big corporations. The artists who receive this money make new plays that are both celebratory and critical of Brazil. My research allows me to meet a different kinds of people who impact me in challenging and exciting ways.

The big chaotic urban environment of São Paulo has already started to change how I live and think. It inspires me to work hard on my project and learn new things about Brazil by exploring all the neighborhoods. A more relaxed form of social interactions here has challenged me to think differently about friendships and care. Every day, I get to practice and improve my professional skills in Portuguese, becoming a better communicator in multiple languages. I am only about halfway through my time here in São Paulo, so I know there is more change to come. There will be times when learning is hard and times when it is exciting and easy. I look forward to sharing all of this with you as we learn about São Paulo together!
