Travel News

How far did I travel this week?:

This week was Semana Santa (Holy Week), which is also a nationally-recognized week of rest, sort of like Spring Break! Because of this, I got to travel around quite a bit. I went from Ojeda to Santo Domingo, to Samaná, back to Santo Domingo, to Mamá Tingó, and finally back to Ojeda. All together, I spent over 20 hours on public transportation!

How far have I traveled on this journey so far?:

Since I have been here for over a year and a half now, I have traveled farther than I can quantify. I've visited six provinces and have lived in two. It is interesting because the DR is a lot smaller than the U.S. The DR is about two New Hampshires big, we like to say, so what's considered traveling "far" here isn't so far by U.S. standards. That being said, because of the lack of efficient transportation and oftentimes a lack of resources, many people don't get the chance to see the country. For this reason, I feel very privileged that I have that opportunity.

How did I get around this week?:

As Peace Corps volunteers, we are not able to drive our own cars or get on motorcycles, which tends to be the primary form of transportation among locals. Because of this, I tend to walk a lot more than the average Dominican in my community.
