Tihar: The Festival of Lights!

Introduction:

Each day of Tihar has its own special traditions! Many people in Nepal follow the religion Hinduism, which is why this Hindu festival is so big in Nepal.

Day 1 – Kaag Tihar (Crow Day)

The first day of Tihar is for the crows! In Nepal, crows are believed to be messengers who bring news. People put food like rice or sweets on their roofs or outside their homes to feed them. This is done to bring good luck and keep away sadness or bad news for the year.

Day 2 – Kukur Tihar (Dog Day)

I think you will like this one! The second day of Tihar celebrates dogs, who are known as loyal friends and protectors. People give dogs flower garlands (mala), mark their foreheads with red (tika) and feed them. All the street dogs get treats on this day!

Day 3 – Gai Tihar (Cow Day) & Laxmi Puja (Goddess Day):

On the third day, in the morning, people honor cows because they give milk and are seen as symbols of wealth. Families put garlands around the cows’ necks and feed them!
