Hello, Classroom! It is officially the end of our journey together, and I have so many feelings about it! While I am wrapping up my time sharing Belize with you, I am still here in Southern Belize continuing my work as a Peace Corps Volunteer. Before I close this chapter with you, I want to take a moment to look back at everything we explored together.
One of the biggest lessons I have learned during my time here is to always be proud of where you come from, because your culture, your food, your language and your traditions are something truly special. I learned that lesson more deeply in Belize than anywhere else in my life.
When I first arrived in Belize, I quickly learned that this country surprises people. Many assume it must be just like its Spanish-speaking neighbors in Central America, but Belize is truly in a category all its own. English is the official language, the food is more Caribbean than anything else and the people represent a beautiful mix of cultures that you will not find anywhere else on Earth.
Together, we learned about the Maya, Creole, Garifuna and Mestizo communities, each with their own history, music, traditions and food. Just like your classroom is made up of different students who each bring something unique, Belize is made stronger by every culture that calls it home.
