Trying New Things!

People will typically eat these for onces (a snack around 11am or 5pm) with coffee, also known as tinto.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

At first, I felt a little nervous to try all the new foods, especially the guinea pig! However, the more foods I tried, the more I learned to keep an open mind. This year, I have really learned that food is an adventure. My rule with food is to always try it -- even if it’s just a little bit. Nine times out of ten, the foods I have tried have been absolutely delicious! I'm curious; what do you think about my rule? Do you think you will start trying new foods, even if they are different from what you’re used to?

How is the food prepared?:

Depending on the region of the country, the food is prepared differently. Here in Bogota, stews or soups are common and typically made in a big batch.

Is this food connected to the local environment? How?:

Absolutely! Just like how in southern Colombia people eat guinea pig, in the Caribbean coast of Colombia, people eat a lot of seafood (fish, shrimp, scallops, etc). This is because seafood is usually more available and fresh due to its geographic area. Seafood is typically paired with a sweeter type of rice, such as coconut rice. In Bogotá and states like Boyacá where one can find arepas boyacenses, the weather is typically colder. This means people prepare heartier meals and soups to stay warm.
