Sounds complicated right? But there is a simple explanation for this, and it is in the history of Armenian people. In the early 1900s, many Armenians had to leave their country because of war and violence. They made new communities in different countries around the world.
Let me tell you about what I like to do for fun. I enjoy practicing different forms of art. I play guitar, sing, paint and draw. I also like to play video games and basketball. For a few years in my life, I was in a rock band, and maybe I will be in one again one day. Music has always helped me feel better whenever I am down or when I want to express myself. Everyone has different things that help them express themselves. What is yours?
When I started college, I decided to study Spanish because I enjoyed speaking new languages and learning new words. Many of my neighbors in Queens also spoke Spanish because they came from Latin America. I also enjoyed taking History classes. Being a historian is like being a detective. You can ask why things happened in the past and see the similarities and differences between human beings all around the world. Finally, I found a way to combine my skills in History and Spanish. I decided to study the history of Guatemala, a country where many people speak Spanish.
Before I could begin my research, I took one important step to familiarize myself with Guatemala. I travelled to Guatemala for two months to volunteer or help people with my time. I volunteered as a teacher of English and physical education, and as an assistant in a local museum. The Guatemalans I met were very happy that I offered my time to help them. I was also very happy to have the chance to meet new people and to see a different country.
