Saludos! Greetings! My name is Vasken Markarian and I am writing to you from the town of Antigua in the country of Guatemala. Antigua is ancient, and has some very old volcanoes! I am not that old. I am 29 years old and I come from Queens, New York! For fun, I like to make art. I play guitar, sing and paint. I also like to play video games and basketball.
When I started college, I decided to study Spanish because I enjoyed speaking new languages and learning new words. Spanish was not my only subject in school. I also enjoyed studying history. Being a historian is like being a detective. You can ask why things happened in the past, and see the similarities and differences between human beings all around the world.
A few years ago, I decided to put history and Spanish together. I had a chance to study the history of one country in Latin America: Guatemala. It is a beautiful country with lots of colors, mountains and trees. Guatemalans speak Spanish, but many also speak Mayan languages. The "Mayan" people in Guatemala share a history, culture and languages that have existed for centuries. This year I am living in Guatemalan so that I can get a first-hand experience and learn more history. I am happy to take you with me on this journey!
