Full disclosure: I don't follow a traditional Balkan diet because I'm a vegetarian and a lot of the local dishes are meat-based. That said, the Balkan region takes just as much pride in its fresh and locally-grown vegetables and fruits as it does in its meat-based dishes, which are mostly pies or pastry with some form of beef.
My diet consists primarily of fresh eggs, olives, and whatever frutis and vegetables are in season at the time that I'm at the grocery store. The vegetables and fruits, some of which are grown in Kosovo, others in the warmer climate of coastal Albania, are delivered fresh to the store almost daily. Most produce here is grown without chemicals, and travels only a short distance between farm and shelf, which makes a huge difference in its taste and nutrition. Plus, everything is super cheap compared to back home. I bought a huge bag of spinach, a bag of bananas and a bag of clementines today for less than $1.50!
I'll admit that I was a ltitle bit nervous when I first arrived in the region because I don't eat meat. However, four months in, I can confidently say that it has been a really enjoyable experience. There are vegetable dishes available in nearly every restaurant.
