Everest, the highest mountain in the world, is in Nepal but I did not know that Nepal has hot, low-elevations areas with tigers, elephants, rhinos, crocodiles and river-dolphins...I was amazed!
My preparation also included finding and applying for funding for my part of the trip. I am a low-income college student on Financial Aid who hasn't won the lottery, so I needed help. I was happy to learn out about the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship Program from my school's study abroad counselor. It's a scholarship program designed for low-income, historically overlooked undergraduate students who want to travel as part of their learning experience. The most important part for earning the scholarship was learning how to write well. I completed the application with help from my Gilman-advisor, and a few weeks later, I learned that I had earned the scholarship! This was a very big deal for me because I have learning disabilities and never thought I could earn a scholarship like this!
Presently, I am a senior in the process of applying to graduate school to study the medical systems of the world and earn a PhD in Mediclal Anthropology.
