A Warm Mountain Meal after a Cold Hike

What food did I try?:

At the top of the mountain, I enjoyed eating a savory dish of meats, different sausages, potatoes, and choucroute. When I ordered at the counter, I told the woman working, “Je voudrais une choucroute”. “Je voudrais” means “I would like”!

After I ate the main dish, I went back and ordered a pie! The pie was one of the best things I ever eaten. I already had the rich flavors of the meat and sauerkraut, which paired perfectly with the tart and sweet pear pie. The pie was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, making it the perfect dessert after such a long hike.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

I felt so happy and excited because the hike built the suspense for this meal! Knowing that my food was earned from the hard work of our hike made me enjoy it even more. As I took my first bite, I realized where I was: on the border of two European countries, in the Alps, eating yummy food with good people.

I felt joy in this moment, and I also felt oddly at home. This is because I realized that I was eating good food, surrounded by good people and fun conversations–much like a meal with my family and friends back at home.

How is the food prepared?:

The food is prepared in a massive pan which cooks all the different types of sausage, meats, and the potatoes. This is convenient for hikers because it is a practical method to cook and keep food warm. Considering the chilly conditions, the large pan helped trap the heat and keep the food warm, allowing everyone to be served at the same time.
