New Zealand is not a very well-connected country. To get from city to city, you have to take a charter bus, which can be a long and expensive trip. Within cities, the bus system generally works the same as it does in the U.S. Unfortunately, there are no fancy subway or train systems to get around, and transportation is kept straight forward and simple. For this reason, almost all Kiwis own a car. It can be pretty cheap to buy a used car. My roommates and I looked into buying one for only $800 USD, whereas a similar car in the U.S. would have cost at least $3,000 USD! However, the most interesting and fun mode of transportation that I used was the Wellington Cable Car! Let's explore this unique mode of transportation some more.
The Wellington Cable Car is mainly used for people who do not want to walk up the sidewalks of the very, very steep city! It also offers an amazing view of the city of Wellington and it is great fun to ride. The tunnels have lots of fun lights and artwork on display. At the top of the hill, you are dropped off near the Wellington Botanic Garden. At the bottom, you are dropped off in the heart of the city of Wellington. This mode of transportation is used frequently by university students traveling to class or into the city for some weekend fun.
