But on my return in May, I will graduate with my Bachelors of Arts in Sociology and a minor in Women's & Genders studies.
As a child I always dreamed of going to Africa. No, I did not know much about Africa, but I felt that my life would be complete if I could set foot on the soil from which my ancestors were stolen and stripped of a great amount of their culture! I am here because I have a fiery passion for educational equity. It is the light to my soul. I will soon own a nonprofit that will attempt to bridge this gap for disadvantaged students. I also aspire to start a school that presents a decolonized education of the oppressed. I chose South Africa due to my program of study in Multiculturalism and Human Rights. I was not sure what to expect here, so far away from home and for so long. Let me tell you, I was SCARED. Committing to this experience was something I toyed with for a while. However, my program is teaching me such a great deal about equity that I am confident I will be able to apply what I’ve learned to the U.S. context, and to my future endeavors as an agent of change. I know that I made the right decision, not only in choosing South Africa, but in choosing my program as well!
As I always say, "With great struggle comes GREATER reward!"
This is a glimpse of my story! I can not wait to meet you all!
