Hello, everyone! I'd like to introduce myself and tell you a little bit about why I'm now living in Karlsruhe, Germany. I’m Willow, and I’m a Fulbright Germany research scholar. The Fulbright Scholar Program sponsors researchers or students to live and research or study in a partner country.
Until July, 2024, I will be performing water technology research at the Engler-Bunte-Institut of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. The Engler-Bunte-Institut (EBI) has a few departments. I work for the Water Chemistry and Water Technology department, which focuses on developing technology to clean and reuse “dirty” water. Fresh water is one of the world’s important resources! We drink it every day to live, and our crops and farm animals need it to live, too. When we use water for agriculture, the water accumulates nutrients, pesticides and dirt. At that point it becomes wastewater, and it is no longer usable for most purposes. People also use water for manufacturing things, and the leftover industrial wastewater can contain harmful chemicals. And of course, water is used to move our... well, waste! When we use water for activities like washing dishes, taking a shower or flushing the toilet, that water becomes wastewater.
