My Trip to Cusco and Machu Picchu

Photos

When we arrived in Cusco, our first stop was the main square, or "plaza", which is home to lots of historic buildings, including a church from the Spanish colonial period
I got hungry as we were exploring the city and decided to buy some boiled corn with cheese, called "choclo con queso" in Spanish, which you can buy from food sellers on the street--Would you try it?
This is quinoa (pronounced "keen-wa"), a kind of native grain that is commonly eaten in Perú--Its seeds are extremely high in protein and are considered a superfood
To get to the famous Inca ruin of Machu Picchu, which is a few hours away from Cusco, we took a train that went next to the river--The water was extremely fast and muddy since it is the rainy season
After a few hours in the train, we arrived in Aguas Calientes, the closest town to Machu Picchu--The river runs through the middle of town, and there are bridges connecting the two sides
From the town, we took a hiking trail up the mountain to the ruin of Machu Picchu--It was a steep climb that made us all very sweaty and tired!
My friends and I at the top of Machu Picchu which was once a small city that was built about 700 years ago and held several hundred people before eventually being abandoned by the Incas--Impressive and worth the climb!
The Incas were skilled builders, and one of their signature techniques was carving huge blocks of stone that fit together without any cement--How many people do you think had to work together to move one of those big blocks?
