The World of Tapas

The croquetas we ordered had finely diced ham inside and like most other croquetas, contained a creamy base made of butter, flour, and milk. This plate along with the salad we ordered were definitely my favorite dishes of the night!

How did I feel when I tried it?:

I was very excited to try this new tapas restaurant because I love trying new restaurants with my friends. I try to go to at least one or two new spots every week because it’s a great way to explore the city and try new variations of foods. It’s also a great chance to catch up and enjoy a slow meal together. I love how all of the restaurants and cafés in Barcelona have their own aesthetic. I also enjoy being able to slowly try all of the different kinds of tapas dishes.

How is the food prepared?:

Because there’s many different types of tapas and ones that can be served hot or cold, they’re all prepared a bit differently. I did a cooking class through my study abroad program where we learned how to make tapas with grandmas at a location called Grandma’s Cooking Workshop! I got put in charge of making the “tortilla” which isn’t the tortilla you’re probably thinking of. The American equivalent is probably an omelet. We used LOTS of diced potatoes, eggs, eggplants, and diced ham. I’d always seen the “tortilla” on menus at tapas restaurants before and had never known what it was, so it was great to learn something new.

Some of the other tapas dishes my friends made at their stations included pan con tomate and jamón. There was even a station for learning how to make sangrias. After we finished making all of the tapas, we plated it and ate together.
