Something that took me by surprise was the lack of bagels in Madrid. I remember buying a tub of cream cheese and being unable to find bagels at the supermarket and thinking that I’d find them at a panaderia (bread store) so I bought the cream cheese, only to later find out that nobody knew what I was talking about!
