In fact, just outside of La Paz, visitors can explore the Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon). This name was given to the area because the landscape is so otherworldly. When people go there, they often say they feel like they must be “walking on the moon.”
La Paz is currently experiencing some smoke pollution from the destructive fires that have been burning throughout the Amazon rainforest in southern Peru, northern Bolivia and southern Brazil. (Bolivia is sandwiched between Peru to the west and Brazil to the east.) The most popular gateway to the Bolivian portion of the Amazon is in a place called Rurrenabaque, located about 250 miles northwest of La Paz. Due to the pollution, we have noticed that on some days, the sky is quite hazy, and we often wake up with very sore throats.
