Cam told me their house is one story with a kitchen, living room, dining room, three bedrooms, laundry, guest room and pool. Zinn added that their house is nestled in a mini forest of fruit trees, including banana, mango and kumquat trees. They live in and belong to an "ecovillage", which Zinn describes as a community that is environmentally aware. He says there are lots of gardens and all the houses have to have a five-star environmental rating. Cam added that there is a dam for swimming and there are loads of kids inside the ecovillage to play with. Both boys emphasized how social the community is and how much they enjoy biking, playing games, and gathering together with their neighbors.
Cam is in charge of composting and recycling for his family. When the buckets are full in the house, he empties them in the bin outside and on the compost pile in their yard. Zinn's job is to empty the dishwasher. He also works for the community's coffee cart by bringing their compost buckets down to the community garden. In return, he is paid $15 worth of food from the coffee cart each week. He likes to spend his pay on a bacon and egg roll and a drink, or two cookies.
The school day goes from 9 am to 3 pm. Usually a neighbor from the ecovillage drops them off at the bus stop around 8:15 where they catch a public bus to school. They take the bus home as well, and one of their parents picks them up at the bus stop around 3:45.
