All aboard the Illawarra South Coast Line stopping at all stations in the New South Wales Transport System. Please mind the gap between the train and the platform! Growing up in Vermont, the big yellow school bus, my parents' car and my bicycle were my only options for getting around the town I grew up in. When I turned 15, I started driving myself everywhere I went. To this day, I have only used public transportation a handful of times in the U.S. Though living without a car in Australia is challenging at times, I really enjoy using the extensive public transportation system here because it is a unique new experience for me! I'm sure many of you reading this are experienced public transport users, so I'm curious: how does New South Wales' public transport system relate to the system where you're from?
In the state of New South Wales, which encompasses Wollongong (where I live) and Sydney (the second largest city in Australia after Melbourne), there are four main modes of public transportation: bus, train, light rail and ferry. The train lines are mostly concentrated around Sydney and the surrounding neighborhoods.
