They offer a one-time payment to students who are seeking to pursue their educational goals abroad. The qualifications include being in a degree-seeking program and being a U.S. citizen. Without this scholarship, I would not be in Hong Kong today. I hope this inspires you to apply for it when you get to university! Studying abroad will challenge you in so many ways (it definitely did for me), but I was able to go to places I never thought I would ever visit. Vietnam, South Korea, China and Japan are just a few of the places that were accessible to me because Hong Kong is a prime spot, so flights were shorter and cheaper compared to flying from the U.S. Being a Gilman Scholar has opened many doors, especially for being part of other exchange programs and even pursuing jobs overseas. I encourage you to seek opportunities to study abroad and learn more about applying for the scholarship.
Thank you, students and Mr. Hoover, for giving me your time and attention. I really enjoyed writing these articles and sharing them with you because I was able to relive the beautiful moments of being in Hong Kong. I hope you all have a wonderful summer break, and good luck on the AP tests and applying to universities!
