An Adventure Around Kirstenbosch Gardens

Finally, when I saw the lemon dove, I immediately fell in love with its warm colors and glossy feathers. The delightful bird stayed silent and huddled under its tree as we watched its movements and took pictures. Even though it didn't move, I enjoyed learning about the bird and taking in its beauty. In fact, our group stayed there for almost five minutes!

Where does it live?:

Lemon doves are commonly found near the coasts of South Africa, making Cape Town a perfect home. These birds often live on the forest floor of land covered with trees and shrubs.

How does it use its environment to survive?:

Lemon doves make great use of their environments, as their diet consists of things found on the forest floor where they live. For instance, these birds mainly eat various fruits and seeds, and even some bugs! Lemon doves drink water from forest streams. These birds also make their nests using materials in the forest, such as twigs, sticks and pine needles.

What can harm this creature or plant? Are we worried about it?:

One of the biggest concerns for lemon doves is damage to their environment. Though these birds are often found on the forest floor, they nest very high up in trees. When forests are cut down, their habitats are destroyed. Fortunately, the current status of lemon doves is "least concern," which means these birds are not endangered.
