If I had not gone out of my comfort zone I would not have been able to fully understand the importance of what the Chinese New Year is and how it impacts the people of that culture. The main difference in perspectives in this situation was that the Chinese people celebrating the Lunar New Year were living and enacting their traditions, whereas I was an outsider looking in. I felt lucky to have this opportunity, because it broadened my knowledge of Chinese culture, while letting me contrast it with my own traditions and holidays. By experiencing this difference, I was able to appreciate where I come from within a broader context. The music I grew up listening to, the Mexican food I grew up eating, and the Latin dances I was taught as a kid felt even more special knowing they are also a part of a culture full of traditions.
Have pride in your own culture, but also appreciate what other cultures can bring you by immersing in their perspective and experiences whenever you can.
