Getting around in rural China can be difficult because the streets are not as wide or, in some cases, have not even been paved.
There are three main ways people get around in rural China:
1. E-bikes - Most young folks get around town by driving an e-bike. Typically you'll see one, two, (or even three!) people on one e-bike.
2. Bikes - There are no shared bikes in villages, but most of the elders have a bike that they ride around town. At 80 years old, my grandma continues to bike around the city on her own blue bike!
3. Walking - Usually, you'll see lots of the older villagers and schoolchildren walking around in the village.
At first, I was scared to ride on an e-bike because I thought it would be like riding a motorcyle in the U.S.A., which looks very difficult and dangerous to me. But after a few test runs on the e-bike, I got the hang of it. It is super-easy, and the e-bikes don't go that fast. They are also very easy to control. So it is no wonder you don't need a license to drive around an e-bike here in China!
