In recent decades there has been a large focus on the reconstruction and documentation of major temple complexes. However, this focus has drawn interest away from sites that predate the Khmer Empire and from researching the communities that actually lived here during that time. Archaeologists are only now beginning to focus on these details.
One way that archaeologists are recording (and preserving) archeological sites is through the use of remote sensing and airborne laser scanning data, allowing for a detailed examination of the extensive water management systems and cultural landscapes of the greater Angkor region. Using this technology, we can analyze how humans manipulated their environment to benefit their lifestyle.
